Memorial Weekend Events

Memorial Day is this coming Monday, May 27th. Here are ceremonies happening all around Hampton Roads where you can honor and remember military service members, followed by several fun events through the weekend and summer!

Virginia Beach

Run to Remember: The Military Aviation Museum on Princess Anne Rd hosts a 5k run/walk and a 1 mile Fun Run to honor America's fallen warriors and support their families.Register, sponsor, donate at Run to Remember.

Annual Memorial Day Ceremony noon to 1 p.m. Tidewater Veterans Memorial, 1000 19th St.

  • The City of Virginia Beach will honor and pay tribute to all the members of the U.S. armed forces in their annual ceremony. It will feature flyovers, 21-gun salute, reading of honored veteran names and remarks from guests. 


Memorial Day Ceremony 11 a.m. Chesapeake City Hall, 306 Cedar Road

  • The Chesapeake Mayor’s Commission on Veterans Affairs will be hosting its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in front of City Hall. Hear from the Mayor and other speakers.


Memorial Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony 2 p.m. Wisconsin Square, 312 W Bute St. in Downtown Norfolk

  • The City of Norfolk will honor the sacrifice of the members of the U.S. armed forces in the annual ceremony. U.S. Navy veteran Sinclair Harris will serve as guest speaker for the event.


Annual Memorial Day Parade 10 a.m.High Street from Peninsula Avenue by I.C. Norcom High School to Crawford Street

  • Beginning in 1884, the City of Portsmouth’s Memorial Day Parade returns each year. It recognizes and honors the sacrifices of the brave men and women serving in the armed forces. There will be floats, marching bands, military units and more.


Virginia Department of Veterans Services Ceremony 10 a.m. Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road

  • For the 68th consecutive year, the Virginia War Memorial hosted the annual official state tribute. The keynote speaker will be Colonel Mike Winstead (U.S. Army, Retired). Additional speakers include David Buchy, Navy veteran and Commander of American Legion Nansemond Post 88. 
Virginia Department of Veterans Services to host 2024 Memorial Day event in Suffolk


Memorial Day Flag Setting Thursday, May 23 at 9 a.m.Cedar Grove Cemetery, 809 S. Henry St.

  • The City of Williamsburg invites the public to help place more than 500 flags on the graves of veterans in honor of Memorial Day. Those interested in participating can meet Caretaker Bill Brown at the flagpole in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Flags will be provided.

Celebrating Freedom and Summer:

  • Drive Safe Hampton Roads is once again partnering with Lyft to offer 757 Sober Rides during what it calls "the deadliest weekend to drive." From 5 p.m. Sunday, May 26 until 2 a.m. Monday, May 27, Lyft users aged 21 and older can receive a discount on their ride.   • Patriotic Festival: Starting Thursday the 23rd and running through Sunday, Norfolk Scope is the site of the annual country music weekend this year with Zac Brown as the headliner.There are pre-show activities also that are free and open to the public. Dets here: Patriotic Festival.
  • Memorial Day Weekend Salute to Summer at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Friday May 24-Sunday May 26. Free concerts at 17th, 24th, and 31st Street stages. Check out the line up and more details here. Salute to Summer.
  • While enjoying the oceanfront events, swing by the Vibe District's Old Beach Farmers Market to celebrate 10 years in business with a ceremony and events. Kickoff is at 10am at the Old Beach Farmers Market.
  • Strawberry Jam Memorial Day Weekend. The Pungo Strawberry Festival has been canceled for the 5th year in a row, but Blue Petes Restaurant has picked up the slack with a Craft Market on Saturday and Sunday. 1428 N. Muddy Creek Rd is the place to find live music, handcrafted items, strawberry margaritas, mimosas, old fashioneds, and smashes!
  • Regular Summer Events:
  • Fridays from May 24th through Aug 30th, Taste on Shore Drive hosts Live on the Lawn from 5:30-8. Family friendly event with burgers and craft beers and local musicians! Find the line up at Live on the Lawn.
  • Saturdays from May to October, at 1PM, the Military Aviation Museum at 1341 Princess Anne Rd Virginia Beach showcases historical aircraft and commemorates important wartime events through narrated flying demonstrations. Enjoy the "Summer of Flight!"
  • YNOT Wednesdays is the center of activity all summer long in Town Center. Every Wed from 5-9pm from June 12-Aug 28th at the Sandler Center Outdoor Plaza, you will find Virginia Beach's most popular bands and food from Ynot Italian. Details are here: YNot Wednesdays.
